If you’ve ever voted in a primary election in Rhode Island, you’ve probably noticed something that sets us apart from most other states: the asterisk next to certain candidates’ names on the ballot.

Those little stars signal that a candidate is endorsed by the Democratic or Republican party. It’s a coveted distinction that also comes with preferential placement on the ballot – and can give politicians an edge in low-turnout and down-ballot races.
