Nikolaus Daubert of Honolulu could not help but flash a double shaka when he crossed the finish line of The Kauai Marathon (yes, he was a full marathoner) on Sunday as Ron Wiley (he also emceed the Tire Warehouse 50th anniversary shindig at the Royal Sonesta Kauai Resort on Saturday night!) announced his name while he passed the run clock that flashed 3 hours, 42 minutes and 10 seconds.

Art Umezu, who was escorting the Iwaki City, Japan, marathoners Toa Ota and Kana Numata, said while the shaka is popular in Hawaii, Iwaki City is the only place where they have adopted the shaka sign as official, and celebrate Jan. 31 — er, one-three-one — as Shaka Day.
