(NewsNation) — Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student, was found dead after jogging in a wooded area on the University of Georgia campus in 2024. Months later, her killer was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
In July, a judge granted Jose Ibarra a mental evaluation, renewing interest in the case that sparked nationwide outrage.
Here's a look back at the case.
Laken Riley's last moments
Riley was reported missing Feb. 22, 2024, when she didn’t return home from a run. Investigators later discovered her body in a forested area on the UGA campus in Athens, Georgia.
University police arrested Ibarra the next day.
In court, footage showed Riley jogging moments before her death, and prosecutors alleged Ibarra was just out of the camera angle's sight.
