HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A new Texas law could help reunite you with your property that's been seized by law enforcement.
House Bill 1261 requires agencies to either notify the last known owner or post online, either on the agency's website or on their social media pages.
In compliance with the new law, the Harris County Sheriff's Office has a webpage highlighting the items the agency is holding. Items listed on the website range from handguns to handbags to laptop computers. HCSO said proof of ownership is required to claim property.
There are a few exceptions carved out in the law, including any contraband that is subject to forfeiture and whiskey, wine and malt beverages.
If property is not claimed within 90 days of being posted, it will be thrown out or sold.
