Leslie Brooks is coming out of retirement to compete with the Pan Alley Steel Orchestra at Panorama, an event that showcases the vibrant music and culture of the Caribbean.

“When it comes to the Panorama competition, we are not reading sheet music. So the ten minutes of the song, we all have to memorize,” Brooks said. Her secret to memorizing the music includes “Herbal teas and coffee and practice, practice, practice.”

Brooks last played in a steel pan competition for Panorama 23 years ago. She said the event is a way to celebrate her heritage.

“It's just a good opportunity to display our culture. And, you know, a little fun competition never hurt anybody,” she said.
