Re: Small modular nuclear reactors touted as “the right size” for our energy needs, Aug. 26

The UCP government has formed an expert panel to consult with Albertans about proposed nuclear energy development. They are seeking feedback on small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), as well as large. They claim there would be a large financial benefit to the province from a single 600-megawatt SMR. A large reactor in the Peace River region, to produce 4,800 MW by 2035, is also being discussed.

As they move forward, there are a few facts to consider.

Past experience in Canada has shown that it takes many years to license and build a nuclear reactor. By 2045 is surely a more realistic timeline.

Why would one 4,800-MW large reactor be needed? Ontario Power Darlington reactors are 1,200 each. Is it
