Manchester United failed with a late bid to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher, talkSPORT understands.

The Red Devils launched a loan bid for the 22-cap England international on deadline day.

However, Atletico immediately rejected the approach as they were not willing to sanction a temporary exit for Gallagher .

The Spanish side had been willing to sell the 25-year-old this summer but he is now set to stay in Madrid.

Crystal Palace had previously shown interest in re-signing Gallagher.

The former Chelsea starlet spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Selhurst Park, scoring eight goals in 39 appearances.

Gallagher joined Atletico from the Blues last summer and has four years remaining on his deal.

He has since made 53 appearances for Diego Simeone's side, providing six as
