MACKINAW CITY — There's only one day a year you can cross the Mackinac Bridge by foot, and on Monday, Sept. 1, thousands took their chance.

Under sunny blue skies, an estimated 33,000 people made their way across the Straits of Mackinac during the 67th annual Mackinac Bridge Walk , according to Michigan Department of Transportation representative James Lake.

People lined up bright and early on both the north and south sides of the bridge to start the walk. Many participants stopped to take photos through the grates at the water below or craned up to look at the towering pillars stretching high above.

The walk, a popular Labor Day tradition, has undergone several format changes over the years. This year, there were three options for those interested in participating:
