ST. IGNACE, MI — Thousands traversed the Mackinac Bridge on foot this Labor Day, getting in on a longtime tradition.

Participants in the 67th installment of the Mackinac Bridge Walk had nice weather as they crossed the Straits of Mackinac Monday, Sept. 1.

This year, 33,000 people planned to walk the bridge, according to the Mackinac Bridge Authority.

The 5-mile-long bridge connects Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas and is the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere.

Walkers could choose to start on either side of the bridge, in St. Ignace or Mackinac City. Some walked halfway and back, while others ventured the whole span.

The bridge walk has been an annual event since 1958 — only cancelled once, in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
