A hiker is dead after falling 60 feet off the top of Whittleton Arch in Kentucky’s Red River Gorge on Labor Day weekend, according to Powell County Search and Rescue , a non-profit volunteer rescue organization.

In a Facebook post , Powell County Search and Rescue said they responded to a call for service at about 4 p.m. Aug. 31, 2025 regarding a man who fell from the top of Whittleton Arch.

According to the group, the man was airlifted to a hospital, but died of his injuries.

Speaking to The Courier Journal on Monday, Powell County Search and Rescue spokesperson Kristin Gousse said while initial reports indicated the man fell about 40 feet, rescuers determined he fell 60 feet, landing on a boulder.
