A 25-year-old Welland man has been arrested after a toddler was sexually assaulted and seriously injured, Sunday.

Niagara Regional Police said the child, who was under five years old, was attacked after an assailant broke into a family’s home near the intersection of Crowland Avenue and York Street in Welland.

Police said officers, who responded to the home with Niagara emergency medical services paramedics at about 8:59 a.m., Sunday, found the front door had been forced open.

Inside they found a child “suffering from serious injuries,” said a media release issued by police.

The child was taken to an out-of-region hospital for advanced medical care.

The child remained in hospital as of Monday morning, listed in stable condition.
