UPDATED WITH INFORMATION FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, 1:25 p.m. Sunday, August 31, 2025 -- HARLINGEN, Texas (AP) — A U.S. judge has blocked the government from deporting a group of Guatemalan children who had crossed the border without their families. The judge ruled Sunday after their lawyers said the youngsters were loaded onto planes overnight and in violation of laws affording protections for migrant kids. The judge, in Washington, says the children need to be taken off the planes and back to Office of Refugee Resettlement facilities while the legal process plays out. Government lawyers maintain that the children aren't being deported but rather reunited with their parents or guardians at those people’s request. The children’s lawyers dispute that portrayal, at least in some cases.
