John Hutton, author of a new book that teaches readers how to draw portraits of each U.S. president and first lady in four simple steps, demonstrates his technique for The Associated Press.

“There are 45 presidents’ lessons in this book. There are 47 first lady lessons also,” Hutton said while introducing his book How to Draw the Presidents & First Ladies.

The book was released by the White House Historical Association in July. Hutton hosted a booth at the People’s House in Washington, D.C., where he showed visitors his methods of drawing presidents.

“You learn how to copy the pattern I make for the nose for this president. And you put them in exactly the right place in the egg-shaped frame,” Hutton said. “And if you do, you’ve got a really good portrait.”

“I’m here to do more presidents. And then in four years, maybe we have another president we’ve got to add to this book,” he added.
