NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- It’s the unofficial end of summer and boaters in New Haven are taking on the water for Labor Day.

While this is a popular time for boat rides, Lisa Fitch, the working manager at the Quinnipiac River Marina in the city's Fair Haven neighborhood, said safety should always come first.

Fitch said to make sure that you're familiar with the water and the tides, and to keep all personal safety devices on and inside the boat. Children under 12 should have their flotation devices on at all times.

If you plan on going out on the water, the National Safe Boating Council recommends you check the weather and equipment, let family know of your whereabouts, have two-way radios and stay alert for other boaters.
