MONTPELIER, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) - Labor Day's meaning and origins are often overlooked in comparison to the weekend's retail sales and, for many, a day off of work. But Vermont labor officials Monday wanted to share their appreciation for Vermonter workers.
“In Vermont, our economy and our communities are powered by hardworking people —from the farmers who keep our tables stocked, to the builders shaping our towns, as well as the educators, health care workers, public servants, and small business employees who serve our neighbors daily," said Interim Commissioner Kendal Smith.
Labor Day's origins are disputed, but Oregon was the first state to pass a law recognizing it, back in 1887, and the first Monday in September became a federal holiday seven years later.
