DENVER (KDVR) -- It's been a hot summer, and Denver's weather is about to go through a transitional phase into fall, ushering in pumpkin spice lattes along with earlier sunsets and cooler temperatures.

Sept. 1 marks the start of what meteorologists consider fall, but the fall equinox will mark the astronomical start of the season on Monday, Sept. 22 this year.

Signs of fall have been creeping in for a few weeks now, with leaves slowly starting to change colors in late August, days of rain bringing comfortable lower temperatures and ski areas announcing plans to open.

However, some are calling it "fake fall" because the summer heat is not over just yet.
