NEWTOWN, Conn. (WTNH) — The annual marching of the Newtown Labor Day parade drew thousands of spectators.

As is usually the case, a roster of politicians gearing up for campaigns — both this fall and next.

The parade traditionally functions as a sort of opening day for a campaign season that ends on Election Day in November.

This year, the only candidates on the ballot are those in local races competing for offices like first selectman and the various boards and commissions that comprise a municipal government.

Even though some of the state's most well-known politicians won't face re-election until next November, campaigning alongside local candidates is seen as a way to curry favor with the rank-and-file members of each party and to stay in the public eye.
