CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Des Moines’ annual Labor Day parade celebrated Iowa’s workers. But this year’s holiday also brings questions for American labor.
“It doesn’t matter whether you’re Republican or you’re Democrat, it matters whether or not you support labor and the workers and the rights of those workers,” said Melissa Speed, AFSCME 61 union member.
President Donald Trump says he’s focusing his first year in office on home grown manufacturing, imposing tariffs on countries like China, India, and Mexico.
But the tariffs also bring uncertainty, “We’re always in support of more goods being made here in the United States,” said Speed. “But we’re also smart enough to understand that you just don’t turn a factory back on overnight.”
But economists warn consumers could feel the effect
