PHOENIX (AZFamily) —It’s official: the summer of 2025 was the fourth hottest summer on record for Phoenix.

Why are we declaring this before summer is actually over? Meteorological summer covers June 1 through Aug. 31, while meteorological fall lasts from Sept. 1 to Nov. 30. Meteorological seasons never change on the calendar to make weather record-keeping easier.

Astronomical seasons are the seasons that we are familiar with. This year, the astronomical fall starts on Sept. 22. Because astronomical seasons depend on the Earth’s position relative to the Sun, the calendar dates are not always the same.

Note that the top four hottest summers on record have all occurred since 2020.
