JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ill. (WSIL)-- Whether it’s staying local, enjoying Labor Day with family, or hitting the road to travel back home, Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Bullard says defensive driving is important when you are out on the roadways.

“How they drive and how they pay attention during the holiday weekend should be the same as how they always do it. If we start doing that more and more, we'll see fewer motor vehicle crashes,” Sheriff Bullard said.

According to IDOT data, last year, during Labor Day weekend, there were 11 deadly crashes, resulting in 11 deaths in Illinois.

“There's nothing that is so important that we have to drive so fast that it becomes reckless,” Bullard said.
