Sanaur MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has evaded arrest in a dramatic incident on Tuesday morning. Police went to Dabri village in Karnal, Haryana, to detain him in connection with an alleged rape case registered under Section 376 of the IPC. Pathanmajra managed to flee in a white SUV, reportedly with help from local villagers and supporters. Police sources say gunshots were fired during the escape, and a policeman was injured after being hit by the vehicle. Authorities plan to file an additional FIR for assaulting a police officer.
Just hours before the incident, Pathanmajra publicly criticised his own party’s handling of flood relief in Punjab and accused a "Delhi lobby" of interfering in state matters. He also went live on social media, calling the case against him politically motivated and vowing to keep speaking up for his constituency.
The rape complaint was filed on August 26, with the woman alleging sexual exploitation under the pretext of marriage. The case was registered Monday evening and had been under investigation.
After learning about the complaint, Pathanmajra began openly criticising the Punjab government. On Monday, the party withdrew his security cover and ordered the transfer of all police post heads in his constituency. Security in Patiala has been tightened amid concerns of possible protests from his supporters.
Police are now working with Haryana authorities to track down the MLA, who remains on the run. The situation continues to develop, with both law enforcement and the public closely watching the case.
