Australia apple growers will have easier access to the Canadian export market following trade negotiations between the nations.

The Department of Agriculture announced on Tuesday that fresh apples could be exported to Canada without fumigation or cold treatment.

Federal Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Julie Collins said the changes came after several years of negotiations.

"We welcome this improved access to the Canadian market and the benefits our growers and producers will reap from the agreement," she said.

"We continue to work on market access opportunities in all sectors of Australian agriculture and take great pride in being able to facilitate the trade of our world class food and fibre."

The announcement comes amid tense trade talks between Canada and the Unit
