The fatal stabbing of a woman fleeing her alleged abuse was reported to police first by the couple's 4-year-old child.

The victim, 24-year-old Neilyann Ysam, was found dead in a Portland, Ore., home on July 19 by authorities responding to a report of a stabbing at the location, Portland Police said in a statement at the time.

S Mate Joseph, 28, was arrested later the same day in nearby Vancouver, Wash., per the statement.
