3S Artspace handled Israel-Gaza conflict issue well

Aug. 27 − To the Editor:

I wish to commend Beth Falconer, Executive Director of 3S Artspace, and her board for their thoughtful handling of a difficult conversation. This year, they invited Miko Peled, an Israeli-American activist, author, and speaker, to have a conversation with lecture-goers. Mr. Peled’s perspective on the Israel–Gaza conflict is viewed by many as extreme, and his rhetoric does not reflect the nuance needed to truly pursue peace.

Our society often reduces issues to “sides” — Israel bad, Gaza good or vice versa. True solutions require a recognition of a middle ground, not the extremes. As President of the local synagogue in Portsmouth, I’ve seen how the Israel / Gaza conflict reverberates here. We’ve faced vandalism,
