Many of the spectators and rooters had long left Laidley Field on Saturday by the time Monica Spencer crossed the finish line to conclude the 15-mile Charleston Distance Run.

Spencer was the 321st and last competitor to cross the finish line, but it was all by design as the volunteer tail walker knew before the race started that she would be the final participant to end the event.

While St. Albans’ Hector Falcon finished first with a time of 1:19.53.61, Spencer came in her designated “last” place at 3:57:16.96.

“When I decided I was no longer going to run this race because it’s just very hard on my knees,” Spencer said, “I just decided that we have some older friends that do these races and sometimes we’d get here and we’d be wondering where they were and there’s no communication as to
