RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The verdict and sentencing phase of the trial of Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro in which is he is accused of allegedly leading a conspiracy to stay in power began on Tuesday.
A Supreme Court panel scheduled sessions on five days through Sept. 12 to decide whether the far-right ex-leader is guilty of seeking to overturn the 2022 presidential election result, when he was narrowly defeated by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
“History teaches us that impunity, omission, and cowardice are not options for peace,” said Justice Alexandre de Moraes, as the trial began.
