A Texas man has been charged with murder days after an 11-year-old boy was killed during an apparent doorbell-ringing prank.
The Houston Police Department announced that Leon Gonzalo Jr., 42, was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Julian Guzman, according to a news release.
Homicide detectives with the department said in a statement the boy was running from a house after ringing the doorbell before he was shot near the 9700 block of Racine Street just before 11 p.m. on Aug. 30. The boy died on Aug. 31.
"A witness said someone ran out of that house and shot, was shooting, at the kid running down the street," Sgt. Michael Cass, with the Houston Police Department, told reporters at the scene. "And unfortunately, sadly enough, one of the boys who was 11 years old was shot in the back."
Cass said police searched the home where the shooting occured and found a significant number of weapons inside, according to ABC News.
Police detained one person at the scene for questioning, who was later released.
Gonzalo was charged on Sept. 1 and taken into custody by members of the department's SWAT and criminal apprehension teams, police said. Court records showed Gonzalo's address is near the 9700 block of Racine Street, where the boy was shot.

There have been at least two other shootings this year tied to a TikTok social media trend in which participants ding, dong, ditch – ring a doorbell and flee.
Earlier in August, a Texas man was arrested for aggravated assault after police said he fired multiple times at a vehicle with three teenagers inside who admitted to doorbell pranking at the man’s house in late July.
In another TikTok ding, dong, ditch prank, a Virginia 18-year-old was shot and killed in May and a homeowner charged with crimes including second-degree murder. Another teen was injured in the shooting.
In Texas, Frisco Police Chief David Shilson advised parents to talk to their kids "about the dangers of participating in these types of TikTok challenges."
A California man was convicted of murder charges stemming from a 2020 doorbell prank-gone-wrong. Anurag Chandra rammed his car into a vehicle of six teenagers, killing three 16-year-olds, after they played a similar prank. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
