State Sen. Gary Stubblefield, a dairy farmer from Branch who played football at the University of Arkansas, died Tuesday morning, the Senate announced Tuesday. He was 74.
"The members and staff of the AR Senate mourn the passing of Senator Gary Stubblefield, 74, who died on Tuesday, Sept. 2," the Senate posted on the X social media platform.
Stubblefield, a Republican, has served in the Senate since 2013 and previously served in the House from 2011-2013. He chairs the Senate City, County and Local Affairs Committee.
He represents Senate District 26, which includes parts of Franklin, Johnson, Logan and Sebastian counties. In the 2024 general election, he won re-election to a four-year term expiring in January 2029, so the governor will have to a call special election to fill the Senate D
