An Ohio man discovered he had bought a winning lottery ticket worth $500,000 after taking his wife to a medical visit.

The unidentified winner purchased the Best of 7's scratch-off at a convenience store in Malvern, which is about 40 miles from Akron.

He made the stop after his wife's appointments for cancer treatment, according to the Ohio Lottery.

When he got home, he learned that he won $500,000, and told his wife the news.

"She looked at me funny and said, 'Did you fall?' I said, 'No, I’m in shock! I think I won half a million dollars,'" he recalled to Ohio lottery officials.

'Can't believe it'

According to the Ohio Lottery, the man's wife thought it was a joke until he scanned the ticket on the mobile app. He ended up taking home $360,000 after taxes.

The man told lottery officials he planned to use the prize money to pay off debt from his wife's medical care.

“I still can’t believe it. I still think it’s a dream!” he told them.
