The Charlotte City Council could vote today to approve a framework for appointing trustees to the proposed Metropolitan Public Transit Authority (MPTA).
What it matters: If established, the 27-member MPTA would represent an overhaul of the region’s transportation system, replacing the Charlotte Area Transit Systems (CATS) as the governing body overseeing public trains and buses.
But first, a few things must happen.
What must happen before the MPTA can be established?
Each municipality impacted must approve a “memorandum of understanding” (MOU) — a document that lays out the ground rules for appointing trustees to the MPTA. Votes will be taken by: • Charlotte City Council • Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners • the towns of Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Matthews, Mint H
