PROVIDENCE – Alice Gibney , the presiding justice of the Rhode Island Superior Court, has served notice that she will retire at the end of the month.

In a letter to Gov. Dan McKee dated Sept. 2, Gibney wrote:

"After 44 years on the bench, I will be retiring effective October 31, 2025."

"It has been the honor and privilege of a lifetime to serve the citizens of Rhode Island and to have worked with scores of wonderful colleagues, staff, and members of the bar. I have enjoyed every second," Gibney wrote.

Who is Judge Alice Gibney?

Gibney joined the court in 1984 and was named presiding justice in 2009 by then-Gov. Donald Carcieri.
