A man was charged with vehicular homicide after his passenger was killed in a one-vehicle crash early Friday in Salem County, according to police and court records.

Kenneth N. Lowry Jr., 21, of Alloway Township, was driving a pickup truck east on Whig Lane Road in Pilesgrove Township, when the vehicle ran of the road to the right, and struck a tree and utility pole before overturning several times, according to New Jersey State Police.

His passenger, Edward G. Mayers III, 20, of Mullica Hill, was thrown from the vehicle and died of his injuries, police said.

Troopers responded to the scene shortly before 2 p.m.

Lowry suffered moderate injuries and was taken to a hospital, police said.
