The federal government chose tariff-battered Hamilton to host a “made in Canada” summit Tuesday focused on building more ships and rail projects with domestic steel.

Chrystia Freeland, the federal Liberal’s transportation and internal trade minister, met with local industrial leaders like Heddle Marine, National Steel Car and host ArcelorMittal Dofasco to talk strategy amid a crushing trade war with the U.S .

The minister stressed it was critical to bring together the rail and shipbuilding sectors with Canada’s beleaguered steelmakers in an effort to fulfil Prime Minister Mark Carney’s promise to “build Canada.”

“This was about really putting them together with the steel industry … to be sure as we are building Canada, we are using Canadian steel,” she said after the event.
