On Thursday, representatives from Aalo Atomics and Idaho National Laboratory (INL) broke ground to start construction on Aalo-X — the first experimental extra modular nuclear reactor (XMR).
Located next to INL's Materials and Fuels Complex, the entities plan to complete construction and have the reactor able to produce power by July 4 of next year. The event comes just two weeks after Aalo was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to participate in President Trump’s Nuclear Reactor Pilot Program. According to a company press release , the selection highlights Aalo’s ability to meet the imminent market demand for new reliable energy sources to power the next generation of AI data centers.
