NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A New Haven high school student was released from the custody of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Tuesday, according to the Connecticut Students for a Dream advocacy group.
Esdrás, an 18-year-old junior at Wilbur Cross High School, was released after posting a $1,500 bond in Plymouth, Mass.
He emigrated to the U.S. from Guatemala in 2023 and was detained on July 21 of this year at a car wash in Southington where he was working. The advocacy group said he spent 44 days in detention.
Connecticut Students for a Dream said Esdrás is in "good spirits" as he makes his way back to Connecticut and provided his statement reacting to the release.
“I am happy to be free. I can’t believe it. Thank you to everyone who helped support me," Esdrás said.
