In Catholic school, my church became a place of calm refuge from a world of hypocrisy, misogyny, racism and abuse of power. The body of Christ in the Host within the tabernacle, immediately beneath the crucifix, displaying great love for all humanity, made church a silently sacred space.
The Annunciation School children were also at school Mass. Their sacred silence, broken by over 100 gunshots, is a terrible sacrilege. The angels and saints to whom children pray could comfort them but not stop the shots fired upon them.
It’s no surprise that the sacrilege going on in our streets, nightclubs, restaurants, and schools invades our most sacred spaces. Every bullet fired into another human being is a violation of a most sacred space.
