NEWBURY, Ohio — A Newbury man died Sunday afternoon after his motor scooter was struck by an SUV at a Geauga County intersection, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Troopers from the Chardon post said the collision happened around 1:56 p.m. Sunday at Ohio 87 and Elm Road.
Investigators said a 2018 Ford Escape driven by 19-year-old Zachary Matthews of Newbury was stopped at a stop sign on Elm Road before pulling onto Ohio 87 and colliding with a westbound 2007 Honda Helix motor scooter.
The scooter’s rider, identified as 69-year-old Paul Buttari Sr., was ejected. He was initially taken by Newbury Township EMS to University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, then flown to UH Cleveland Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. Authorities said Buttari was not wearing a helmet
