WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) — One of Connecticut's most heavily-traveled highways is soon to be reimagined as leaders with the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) finalize plans for an improvement project along I-84 and Route 8 through Waterbury.

Known by many as the "Mixmaster," the stacked highway design was made to accommodate the 100,000 drivers each day. Today, CTDOT leaders say there are up to 200,000 drivers a day.

"It really was a modern engineering marvel of its time in the 50s and 60s," Josh Morgan, a CTDOT spokesperson, said. "Today, it just does not work."

Gears are in motion to bring the interchange into the 21st century, followed by several years of a study taking input from community leaders.
