OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - A section of 108th Street, north of Maple Street, has undergone some major change to its layout. Some people who live nearby wondered why the city made this change.
Austin Rowser with Omaha Public Works told First Alert 6 the main reason was safety.
What once was a four lane road is now two lanes in each direction, and there are bike lanes on either side.
“It kind of makes the corridor feel more narrow,” Rowser said. “It cues the driver to use less speed when they travel.”
The speed limit has also dropped from 40 to 35 miles per hour. These are all welcome changes to cyclist Mike McGee.
“It’s a great step forward to acclimating the motoring public to bicycles and sharing the road with the streets, which we’ve legally been allowed to do for forever.” McGee said.
