MAINE, USA — The nights are growing longer, and the mornings cooler. That said, there's still a lot of mild weather ahead before fall truly settles in, even as our routines shift from summer mode.

At the same time, our landscape is beginning a transformation, as the annual fall foliage show kicks off in the next several weeks.

Jim Salge, a former meteorologist at the Mount Washington Observatory, has become an expert on predicting how the color change may unfold. He publishes an annual fall foliage forecast for Yankee Magazine , and shared his thoughts with us.

Now a teacher, Salge said this is a nice way to stay connected with the weather community.

"I'm really passionate about how the weather affects the forests and nature up here," he said.
