HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - September is officially Hawaiian History Month .

Leaders from the city held a press conference Tuesday at Kapolei Hale to honor the start of the month.

This marks the first officially recognized Hawaiian History Month, which became law when Senate Act 167 was adopted earlier this year.

The press conference was held at the Umeke La’au art installation by Native Hawaiian artist Meleanna Aluli Meyer.

The City and County of Honolulu’s Mayor’s Office of Culture and the Arts partnered with the Hawaii Ponoi Coalition and the Hawaiinuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge to launch Hawaiian History Month.
