CASTINE, Maine — As the new academic year kicks off, Maine Maritime Academy in Castine is offering students a chance to pursue a career in nuclear energy for the first time in over 30 years.
The nuclear engineering program provides students the opportunity to earn a minor in the field, preparing them for careers in nuclear systems, at sea and on land.
The initiative comes amid a renewed national interest in nuclear energy, with industries—from maritime shipping to AI data centers—looking to reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency.
Broday Simpson, a junior at MMA, is one of 11 students to enroll in classes for the minor this semester.
“There’s just nothing else like it,” Simpson said.
The program was made possible by a $1.5 million donation from alumnus Guy E. Mossman
