Tom Cleverley thought Middlesbrough's highly-rated 19-year-old Law McCabe was the best available central midfielder to Plymouth Argyle before completing a loan move shortly before the summer transfer shut on Monday.

Cleverley had indicated after the 4-0 defeat away to League One leaders Cardiff City on Saturday that he was looking for a player in that position who would bring some much-needed experience to his youthful squad, and the Pilgrims were strongly linked with Derby County's 31-year-old Ben Osborn, who ended up joining Stockport County on loan.

However, the severity of the hamstring injury in training last Thursday to wide right attacking player Xavier Amaechi, which will keep him out of action until the new year, meant Cleverley wanted to make two deadline day signings, not ju
