GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting that took the lives of 28 people was the beginning of Mason County Central Superintendent Jeff Mount wanting to do everything he could to make sure students in his district were safe from gun violence.

"[It] really shook me up, and it shook up our sheriff here in Mason County, and we reached out to each other and just said, we've got to do something,” Mount said.

After receiving three separate grants from the state of Michigan to improve security, Mount got wind of a system called ZeroEyes , an artificial intelligence-based software, that can detect guns using the school's security cameras.
