The Nashville Zoo is mourning the loss of the matriarch of its giraffe herd.
Nasha, an 11-year-old Masai giraffe, died in mid-August from intestinal complications, the Zoo posted on Facebook Aug. 25.
"As the matriarch of our herd, Nasha made a lasting impression on both guests and keepers. She had a playful spirit and unique personality that made her unforgettable and adored by many," the Zoo said. More: See Nashville Zoo's newest babies: Why Music City is the leader in leopard repopulation
Nasha was a model giraffe, acting as an ambassador helping "people build a personal connection to the challenges giraffes face in the wild," the Zoo said. Masai giraffes are endangered.
