As the ball sailed toward the stands in right field, Rafael Devers stood in the Coors Field batter’s box and admired his 30th home run.

Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland didn’t like it. He came into the game with 13 losses in the midst of a bad year for a bad team. Once the former Red Sox star began trotting down the first baseline, Freeland began shouting at him.

Devers responded and the benches emptied. Infielders Matt Chapman and Willy Adames were in the thick of a scrum that was more yelling than actually swinging. They were both ejected from the game along with Freeland.

Devers was guided away from the action by Giants manager Bob Melvin, allowing him to finish his interrupted home run trot. Devers, who began the game playing first base, slid over to third to replace Chapman.
