Pay-per-mile car tax is becoming more popular across the globe - with the US introducing a new scheme for motorists, road users and drivers. United States road users in Oregon must fork out a new tax to use the road netwprk.

Governor of Oregon, Tina Kotek, is introducing a new charge which will raise the "gas tax" by six cents (four pence) to 46 cents (34p) per gallon, hiking fees for petrol and diesel drivers.

The OReGo programme for electric vehicles and hybrids requires owners to sign up, with Governor Kotek calling it "necessary" to fund future road projects.

Should the gas tax increase be approved, drivers either would pay about 2.3 cents - around 1p per mile, or choose an annual flat fee of $340.
