These days, it takes quite something to become one of the most hated men in the United States. But that is the fate that seems to have befallen tennis super-fan Piotr Szczerek, who came to infamous prominence this week at the US Open.

A highly successful Polish businessman , Szczerek had apparently been waiting with his sons at the end of a match between Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak and the Russian player Karen Khachanov, hoping for autographs. But when Majchrzak handed a cap to another boy, footage seemed to show it being snatched away by Szczerek, before being squirrelled into his wife’s bag.

In the ensuing row, the Google review rating of Mr Szczerek’s paving company has plummeted, the wronged boy has had his cap returned (as well as being given a bunch of other merch by Majchrzak) – a
