The Humane Society of Monroe County and the Monroe Sheriff's Office's Animal Control division are seeing the number of calls for strays increasing since the two first began collaborating for the well-being of animals in 2023.

According to Lt. Brian Quinn, who oversees Animal Control, the number of calls they received in 2023 was 1,821 but jumped to 2,542 in 2024. As of Aug. 27, they've had 1,798 in 2025.

"So, I don't know if we're going to pass 2024, but they come in every day, you know," Quinn said.

The Humane Society is having similar issues; they get a lot of calls for strays, and even calls for dogs people want to surrender have gone up in the last year.

"Even the last six to seven months have climbed," said Jacqueline Monteer, the Humane Society's executive director.
