Some victims of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein are set to speak at a press conference on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the Capitol. The bipartisan event is organized by Reps. Ro Khanna, D-California, and Thomas Massie, R-Kentucky, who predict it will be "explosive."
The press conference will feature ten women, some of whom have never spoken publicly before, Khanna told NBC's Meet the Press.
"They will be telling their story and they will be saying clearly to the American public that they want the release of the Epstein files for full closure on this matter," Khanna said on Sunday, Aug. 31.
Massie filed a discharge petition for the Epstein Files Transparency Act on Sept. 2, which would force floor action on the bill if 218 representatives signed on.
Khanna confirmed that all 212 Democrats will sign the petition, and Massie had garnered the support of 12 Republicans. To date, it has 134 signatures, including Massie and three other Republicans.
The press conference follows the House Oversight Committee's release of its first tranche of documents on Epstein on the first day Congress was back in session after the Labor Day holiday.
Massie told reporters outside of the Capitol that the release was "only 1% of what they possess and 97% of it's already been released."
Ranking member of the House Oversight Committee Robert Garcia, D-California, also said that most of what was released by the committee was already public.
"What we need right now is full compliance with the subpoena," Garcia said. "The attorney general who once said all the files were on her desk should release all the files immediately."
Members of the committee met with some of Epstein's victims on the same day as the release.
“What they revealed is not only the trauma of hundreds (maybe thousands) of young women, but a cover-up of epic proportions involving the wealthy, the well-connected, and even our own government – all the way to the top,” Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-New Mexico, told reporters after the briefing.
